Tornados

What to do during a Tornadotornado

If you are in a house or small building, go to the basement or storm cellar. If there is no basement, go to an interior room on the lower level (closets, interior hallways, bathroom,etc.). Get under a sturdy table, hold on until the danger has passed.

In a school, nursing home, hospital, factory or shopping center, go to a predesignated shelter area. Interior hallways on the lowest floor are usually safest. Stay away from windows and open spaces.

In a highrise building, go to a small interior room or hallway on the lowest floor possible.

If there is no shelter nearby, lay flat in the nearest ditch, ravine, or culvert with your hands shielding your head. "Be alert to flooding".

In a car, get out and take shelter in a nearby building. "Do not attempt to out drive a tornado". They are erratic and move swiftly.

Do not seek shelter under an overpass. Due to the vortex caused by the tornado, this is one of the most dangerous places to be. When exiting a vehicle do not leave it in the traffic way, or emergency equipment etc. will be blocked.
